PET EMERGENCY SERVICE OUT-OF-HOURS
What is toxic to my pets?
Keeping your pets safe involves being aware of various substances that can be toxic to them. Many everyday items, such as chocolate, grapes, and onions, are harmful if ingested by pets. Certain plants like lilies and sago palms are dangerous, especially to cats. Household chemicals, including antifreeze and pesticides, along with human medications like ibuprofen and acetaminophen, can also pose serious health risks. Understanding these potential hazards helps you create a safer environment for your furry friends.

Why is Chocolate Toxic?
Chocolate
Chocolate is toxic to pets because it contains theobromine and caffeine, which their bodies can't process effectively. Even a small amount can cause vomiting, diarrhea, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, seizures, and in severe cases, death. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is. Keep all chocolate out of reach to prevent a potentially fatal situation for your pet.

WHY IS GRAPES TOXIC?
GRAPES AND RAISINS
Raisins are toxic to pets because they can cause sudden kidney failure. Even a small amount can lead to symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and loss of appetite. If left untreated, this can quickly progress to more severe symptoms and potentially be fatal. It's crucial to keep raisins and any foods containing them away from your pets to avoid a dangerous health crisis.

Why is onion or garlic toxic?
Garlic and Onion
Garlic and onions are toxic to pets because they contain thiosulfates, which can cause oxidative damage to red blood cells, leading to hemolytic anemia. Even small amounts can result in gastrointestinal symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea, and progress to weakness, lethargy, and pale gums. Severe cases can cause organ damage and be potentially fatal. To ensure your pets' safety, keep garlic, onions, and foods containing them well out of reach.
Why is caffeine toxic?
Coffee
Caffeine is toxic to pets due to its stimulant effects on the central nervous system and cardiovascular system. Pets, especially dogs, are more sensitive to caffeine than humans. Ingestion of caffeine-containing products like coffee grounds, tea bags, energy drinks, or certain medications can lead to symptoms such as restlessness, rapid breathing, heart palpitations, tremors, seizures, and even death in severe cases. It's essential to keep all caffeine-containing items securely stored and out of reach of pets to prevent accidental ingestion and potential poisoning. If ingestion occurs, seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Why is ibuprofen toxic?
Ibuprofen
Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) commonly used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation in humans. However, it is highly toxic to pets, particularly cats and dogs, even in small doses. Ibuprofen can cause severe gastrointestinal ulcers, kidney damage, liver failure, and other systemic effects in pets. Symptoms of ibuprofen poisoning include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, lethargy, weakness, decreased appetite, and in severe cases, seizures and coma. Prompt veterinary attention is crucial if you suspect your pet has ingested ibuprofen, as early intervention can significantly improve the chances of recovery and minimize potential complications. Keep all medications securely stored and out of reach of pets to prevent accidental ingestion.
